Benefit and Harms of Bilberry

As is known, the majority of berries that are growing today in the country and garden plots had been got from the wild plants. Among them is the bilberry, whose fetuses previously could be found only in the forest thickets and groves. Today, the bilberries are "tamed" berries, very tasty and at the same time useful. It contains numerous of nutrients and vitamins, and it does not matter in what state is the berries − in fresh, grated, frozen and so on. Thanks to the content of such substances, the bilberries have a lot of useful properties, which only positively affect the human organism. This berry is recognized by many scientists, nutritionists and has long been used in folk-medicine as a drug. So, let us look at the useful properties of bilberry closer.
 

Medicinal Properties and Composition of Bilberries

In the composition of many useful substances that are included in these berries, there are antioxidants. Their presence in many respects predetermines the useful properties of any product; therefore, the bilberries are primarily valued at the expense of these microelements. These substances effectively affect the malignant tumors, delaying their formation and spreading, and are simply an excellent preventive agent. There are a number of drugs that are used in the cancer diseases, which include bilberry antioxidants (usually such substances are called anthocyanins). Note that the amount of antioxidants in the bilberries exceeds their number in the vegetables and many fruits.
 
In addition, the bilberries are rich in other mineral substances, micro- and macro-elements and vitamins, and so on. Among them, there are many:

- carbohydrates;
- potassium;
- phosphorus;
- magnesium.
 
Also, there are various organic acids, iron and copper, and so on in the useful composition of this berry. As for vitamins, the highest content of vitamins A and C is in the bilberry, in addition to them, there are also vitamins B − B1 and B6, as well as the vitamin PP. Among other things, the bilberry contains pectin, which is used to purify the intestine from slags and heavy metals.
 
The bilberries are excellent natural antiseptic. In general, numerous fetuses, especially berries, have similar properties, as the bush gives all its strength to growing and ripening the fetus. Therefore, such an antiseptic will be effective for improving immunity, therefore, in the treatment of colds, coughs, flu and so on. It will be very useful for the treatment of the throat, having a softening and warming effect. Moreover, in addition to berries themselves, the leaves of the bilberry bush are used for these purposes.
 
The bilberry also has a beneficial effect on the genitourinary system. Due to the presence of the acids in this berry, they help splitting and purifying the kidneys and urinary canals from the formed salts. Also, using the folk recipes with the bilberries, women can weaken menstrual processes, and make their flowing less painful. In addition to the genitourinary system, the bilberries have a serious influence on the digestive system. Juices and decoctions based on the bilberries (and even fresh berries) also have a softening effect on the walls of the stomach, intestines and other digestive organs, thereby improving the processes of assimilation of food. In addition, the effect of the fresh bilberries on constipation has been proven repeatedly, but with diarrhea it is better to use the dried berries.
 
It is interesting that in the bilberries there is a low sugar content, even though these berries have a sweet taste. This makes it possible to consume the bilberries to patients suffering from diabetes, reducing the amount of sugar in the person's blood. Among other things, the bilberries have cosmetic properties, it is not for nothing that this berry was called "rejuvenating". The organic substances and the mineral acids, which are parts of its composition, have a moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effect on the human skin. Therefore, you can see the image of blueberries repeatedly on the packages of creams.
 
By the way, the bilberry is often used as a preventative for the health, and also becomes an excellent assistant during diets and active weight loss phase. Also, the bilberries boost the mood and stimulate the brain to vigorous activity. Agree, that when you eat these berries, most likely your mood is raised.
 

Possible Harm of Bilberry

As for contraindications, in this case it is better to avoid the bilberries for those who have any allergic reactions and diseases. Also, it should not be abused these berries with a disease such as oxalaturia (kidney's disease). Among other things, it is simply necessary and important to pay attention to where the bilberry ripened and in what conditions. The fact is that like a sponge, it absorbs harmful substances from the air, and tries to neutralize them, but this is not always possible because the air can be too polluted.
