Benefits and Harm of Viburnum

One of the most useful berries, albeit not far from the most delicious, is a viburnum. The fruits of this plant have long been valued for their useful and medicinal properties. As a rule, the most valuable berry − is after the first frost. During this period, it becomes less bittered, more useful, and therefore it is necessary to begin harvesting the viburnum precisely during this period. These plants are growing almost everywhere. It can often be found in the wild − on the banks of rivers, on the surface of relief beams, forests and plantings, and in country or residential areas. 

Useful properties of the viburnum have been known for a long time. The berries are used in folk-medicine for several centuries now. They are collected it in the late autumn, and even at all in the middle of December. Fruit drinks, compotes and other drinks produce from the viburnum. 

Useful Composition of Viburnum 

All the medicinal force of the viburnum is in its useful composition. So, these berries contain a lot of vitamins and minerals. For example, vitamins A and C, as well as vitamins K and P, are bright representatives. There are also the useful minerals − iron and phosphorus, as well as the acetic and ascorbic acids, the sugar, many natural esters. However, the bitterish taste of fruits means the presence of glucoside. 

Interestingly, in terms of the amount of vitamin C, the viburnum is superior to raspberries and some types of citrus and by the amount of iron, it is at all a record among berries.

Useful Properties of Viburnum Berries 

In view of the fact that there are so many useful substances and minerals in the viburnum, therefore, it has many useful properties, which can be talked about for a very long time. Often, the viburnum is used in the treatment of colds and viral diseases, helps cope with infections and promotes immunity. Use this berry it is recommended not only in the period of illness, but also include in the daily diet to fight and prevent diseases such as hypertension and atherosclerosis. The viburnum is also effective in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, for example, with gastritis, colitis, gastric or duodenal ulcers, and so on. 

Various kinds of tinctures are made from the viburnum, some persons even make home-made alcoholic beverages from it. Also, from the viburnum you can make vitamin tea, jam, syrup, and other drinks and goodies. These products are also exactly used, like the viburnum itself, in diseases and against the fight against viruses. In addition, the viburnum helps with vascular spasms, as well as skin rashes or nasal bleeding. Among other things, the viburnum is useful in the treatment of: 

- bronchial asthma; 
- cough; 
- bronchitis; 
- chronic tonsillitis. 

In the treatment of these diseases, as a rule, the following recipe is used: the viburnum rubbed with honey, and then taken several times a day, along with hot black tea (preferably with lemon). The constant use of the viburnums will be very useful, and in no case it will not be harmful. Among other things, the viburnum is an excellent anti-inflammatory agent, the broths from it help improve the functioning of liver and heart. The fruits of viburnum have a beneficial effect on the choleretic function, so they can also be used to adjust this process. 

Recipe for Preparation of Viburnum Berries 


For the preparation of the syrup, it is enough to prepare one gallon of vine juice, about 4.5 pounds of sugar, and 0.3 ounce of citric acid. Adding sugar to the juice, stir the consistency until it dissolves completely, keeping the mixture on a fire. Next, remove the foam from it and add the citric acid in it. The syrup boiling is not necessary; it is enough to warm it up for five minutes on a low heat. Then, pour it into the bottles, and put them in a dark cool place. Be sure to observe that the hygiene is observed − lids and containers (cans) boil before using; otherwise the syrup will quickly become unusable. 

Harmful Properties of Viburnum 

Unfortunately, viburnum still has some drawbacks, so the treatment should be done with caution. Bitterness, which is inherent in the viburnum, in rare cases can cause side- effects, so in this case it is necessary to approach the dosage with fruits of the viburnum correctly. Naturally, this happens not so often, but even such a small nuance should not be written off. 

The viburnum contraindicated to the people, who suffer from high acidity of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as to those, who have problems with the secretion of gastric juice. The viburnum is not recommended for the people who have clearly low blood pressure; this applies to both old and young people since the viburnum berries tends to reduce the blood pressure. It is not necessary to use the viburnum in large quantities if you have the kidney stone diseases or the gout. Thus, the viburnum is a valuable source of beneficial properties, which sometimes even irreplaceable.
