Useful Properties and Application of Physalis

One of the surprisingly useful plants that we are accustomed to see as a decorative one can be called physalis (strawberry tomato). This plant's fruits are somewhat similar to the Chinese small lanterns from the outside, and to the tomatoes inside. The physalis berries are very tasty, and most importantly - useful! 

However, be careful because the decorative varieties of physalis cannot be eaten. Only edible varieties are suitable in our case. In this article, we will discuss the benefits of physalis, the facts that it can bring valuable to our body, and what vitamins you will get with it. 

The physalis is an excellent source of carbohydrates, contains a huge amount of fructose and glucose, about six per cents of the total composition. And this, in turn, is a very decent result. This physalis contains numerous active substances and minerals − polyphenols and tannin, fizaline and flavonoids. Also, it contains the citric acid. 

The physalis's fetuses can replace the medical vitamin preparations. So, in this plant there are the abundance of vitamin A, vitamins B1 and B2, a certain amount of vitamins B6 and B12. The fruits of the physalis are useful for the vegetarians who do not receive these vitamins, refraining from meat products. 

The strawberry tomato contains the acids, in particular, malic, tartaric and citric. In smaller quantities, there are the amber and synapic acids. The berries' bright color are due to the lycopene − a substance that has the antioxidant properties. 

In 100g of physalis there are 6.3 grams of fat, 1.9 − of protein and 11 − of carbohydrates and 85 grams of water. 

Benefits of Physalis 

The plant's fetuses, in fact, have a very positive effect on the organism. This physalis has the antiseptic and analgesic effect; it acts as an excellent anti-inflammatory agent. 

Physalis's berries improve the blood clotting, so the wounds and skin lesions on the body are tightened more quickly. Also, the physalis has a strong diuretic and choleretic effect. Including it in the diet, the physalis helps remove salts and stones from the organism, kidneys, and harmful substances from the liver. 

It is useful to use this product for the ulcerous inflammations, with the chronic cholecystitis or the diabetes mellitus. The physalis is useful and at the jaundice, as well as the hypoacid gastritis. It is very useful for those who suffer from hypertension or epilepsy. 

The physalis has a positive effect on the women's health. So, it has the antiseptic properties that help cope with the urolithiasis, the pyelonephritis and the other inflammatory ailments. 

Use of Physalis in Folk-medicine 

An infusion for the treatment of nephrolithiasis: dried berries (two tablespoons), cook for five minutes in 18 oz of water. Apply to 0.5 cup four times a day. 

Fresh physalis's fetuses cure the gout. Daily eat at 10-15 pieces. At pains in a stomach drink the physalis's fruits juice at 0.7 oz. The physalis's tincture on wine for the jade and the illnesses of kidneys: the crushed berries (3.5 oz), the red dry wine − 34 oz. Insist 20 days. The course of treatment lasts a week, at which time you should drink 1.8 oz each time. 

The physalis's fruits are consumed in a dried and marinated form. You can dry them in the sun or in the oven and apply for the same diseases as fresh ones. For severe kidney disease, take at 0.2 oz of physalis's berries every day. 

To prepare the decoction you need 0.7 oz of dried physalis's fruits pour 17 oz of water, cook for 10-15 minutes, and then insist until it cools. This decoction is used for the coughing, as an analgesic and hemostatic agent − for example, with the profuse menstruation. In the inflammatory diseases, at the gout and rheumatoid arthritis take a quarter of a cup four-five times a day.
