Usefulness of Potato Chips Is True or Myth?

Let potato chips do not belong to sweets; however they are one of the most popular treats to date. The popularity of this product scored for various reasons − a specific taste, financing the production of the product and so on. Today, probably everyone tried the given product and even has indulged himself it too often. In fact, sometimes, it is also difficult to refuse the light crisp taste of the chips, as well as refuse, for example, from the sunflower seeds husking. This is a great snack for men who drink beer, watching football or just sitting in the company. The chips are one of the favorite delicacies of children and, despite all the prohibitions of parents, the children still buy them, and eat somewhere in the yard with the other ones until the parents see them. 

And everything, it would seem, is so wonderful − the tasty, popular and inexpensive product, but in fact it is necessary to understand what the benefits of the potato chips are, and how much harm we can be received from them. Thus, now we will consider the main useful and harmful properties of the chips, on the basis of which everyone can be convinced of their sense of existence. 

Chemical Composition of Potato Chips 

Naturally, the chips, invented a century ago, are significantly different from today's. If before they were made very elementary − fried thin slices of potatoes, sprinkled with spicy seasoning, salt or pepper, now everything has changed radically. And these changes that have affected the product today are very significant. Thus, the various flavor enhancers (chemical additives), such as sodium glutamate, for example, were added to the chips. In addition, today's potato chips are flavored with one more chemical additive − a flavor that is they release these chips with the taste of bacon, pepper and mushrooms, and so on. 

However, and this is not the latest changes. Often, even the main component of chips − potatoes − is changed. It is replaced with the potato flour or the special potato flakes. In addition, the roasting of chips takes place in a lot of oil (often, the chips are fried in the same butter, which contradicts all sanitary standards), and the product is saturated with various carcinogens. The chips, cooked not from potatoes, but from any other substitutes can be checked − set on fire, as a result of which they will burn, and emit black smoke. Thus, the chemical composition of the chips is simply catastrophic. 

Useful Properties of Chips 

With regard to the useful properties of the chips everything here is very meager, bad and poor.  The only, though rather conventional, useful property of them is the unusual taste. And really, occasionally, you can indulge yourself with this product and do without negative consequences, but this is only occasionally. If we are talking about homemade chips, then their benefits are exactly the same as those from the potatoes cooked in the special deep fryer. Thus, on this, the useful properties of the potato chips are exhausted, and now it is worthwhile to discuss about what actually represents this product.  

Dangerous Properties of Chips 

Among the harmful products created by humans, chips, perhaps, would take one of the first places. Concerning the harm of the chips, a lot of research was carried out, and numerous of practical experiments were established. It was found that the daily eating of chips promotes the development of the heartburn, then becomes the cause of gastritis and eventually leads to the various bowel diseases. Continued use of the chips will lead to a sharp increase in cholesterol in the blood, and the formation of cholesterol plaques. 


The chips contain a very large amount of carcinogens, which exceeds all the permissible values from 50 to 500 times. This can cause the development and occurrence of cancer cells, tumors and so on. As a rule, a very large amount of salt is involved in the chips, and this, in turn, can cause a metabolic disorder. Sodium chloride, which is a part of the chips, can cause the cardiovascular diseases, the bone imbalance, as well as disruption of the bones' functioning and growing. 

The most sad is the fact that these chips have a harmful effect on the children's organism. And after all, the children are, perhaps, the largest consumer of this product. A gentle children's organism is especially exposed to chemicals. Their result − cause severe allergies, can easily cause the development of the excess weight and three times faster cause a disruption of the gastrointestinal tract. A hundred grams packet of the chips contains more than 30 ounces of carcinogenic fat, which is not just deposited in the body, but also disrupts the liver, stomach and pancreas, and so on. Salts, contained in this "delicacy", can be deposited in the kidneys, causing the disruption and provoking the diseases of the genitourinary system. Thus, the harmful properties of the potato chips are more than justified, and there are much more than the useful qualities.
