Catfish - Useful Properties and Cooking Recipes

In the fish departments of supermarkets one can meet a fish flesh of "catfish". This fish has a rather frightening appearance, it lives in the waters of the Atlantic and Pacific, and in the common people it is called a sea-wolf. In large quantities there are the phosphorus and the calcium, as well as the magnesium, which is extremely useful for your bones and the joints. In addition, the magnesium takes part in the metabolic processes − fat, protein metabolism. This catfish contains a great quantity of Omega-3 and Omega-6 acids. 

The regular consumption of catfish's fillet saturates the organism with the vitamins A and B, a small amount of vitamins E and D, as well as the vitamin PP. The catfish is a low-calorie fish − on 100g only 126 Kcal. In this fish, there are no carbohydrates, and the amount of fat is about 5-8g per 100g of product. In addition, the caloric content depends on the method of preparation − in the cooked fillet there are about 114 Kcal per 100g, and in baked fish a slightly more − 137 Kcal. 

Benefits of Catfish 

Who can the catfish be useful for? First, it is for the people with diseases of cardiovascular system. So, the catfish helps eliminate the high cholesterol, strengthens the bones and the muscles. Unsaturated fatty acids help cope with the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, and also improve the brain activity. 

Official medicine strongly recommends eating the fish for those who undergo the rehabilitation and recovery. And the catfish helps recover, due to the presence of nutrients in its fillet. 

A large amount of potassium can also be useful for those who are prone to the high blood pressure. Moreover, the use of the catfish's fillet promotes the removal of salts from the organism. This catfish is recommended for the duration of diet, replenishing the missing nutrients and vitamins. 

It is recommended to use the catfish's fillet at the ischemic disease or the hypertension. Vitamins in this fish improve the blood coagulability. All these properties only positively way affect the state of health. 

Harmful Properties and Contraindications 

The sea fish itself is already considered a strong allergen, so for some people, even after cooking, it can be individually intolerable. Do not recommend the use of this catfish to the small children who have irregularities in the pancreas. 

Also, it is necessary to limit the use of this catfish during the pregnancy and the lactation. This can negatively affect the future child's nervous system. 

Catfish in Batter 

It will take: 21-25 oz of catfish, one egg, half of a cup of ground dried breadcrumbs, 1.5 tablespoons of flour, pepper, salt, vegetable oil. 

To fry the catfish, it is necessary to cut it in the steaks 0.4-0.8 inches thick, rub with the pepper and the salt and remove for half an hour in the cold, then, wrap in flour, dip into a lightly beaten egg and roll in the breadcrumbs. Spread this catfish in a frying pan with the hot oil and fry on both sides over medium heat until tender. From such catfish, very tasty and nutritious fish cutlets are obtained. 

Broth from Catfish 

It will be necessary: four potatoes, one carcase of small catfish, one carrot, one tablespoon of millet or oatmeal, bay leaf, pepper, salt. 

To boil a broth out of the catfish, you need to cut the fish into the pieces and put them in a saucepan with boiling salted water, boil 20 minutes. Peel the potatoes and cut them into dice, chop the onion finely, grate the carrots or cut them into small pieces. Take the fish from the broth, separate the flesh from the bones, strain the broth, put down the fillet into the broth again, add the oatmeal and cut vegetables, laurel, pepper, salt, boil for 10 minutes until the vegetables are ready and season with greens before serving, giving a little brew. 

Recipe for Catfish with Vegetables in Foil 

It will take: 10.6 oz of catfish, 5.3 oz of cheese, two large carrots and one onion, half of a teaspoon of pepper ground. 

To bake the catfish with the vegetables in a foil, it is necessary to grate the pieces of fish with the pepper and the salt, lay on a lightly oiled foil, put the fried onion and carrots on the top (carrots − rub on a large grater, onions − the half rings). Sprinkle on the fish and vegetables the grated cheese, wrap the foil and bake it in a preheated oven for 392 0F 30-40 minutes.
