Many people know that South America (Bolivia) is the motherland of potatoes, right there, after discovery, it was discovered this vegetable. By the way, the potato was classified as a vegetable not because it has the useful and tasty tubers, but because of the fruits of the potatoes (green balls) that are knitted up on the tops. However, these fruits are poisonous, so we will not return to them again. Let us consider the useful properties of the potato tubers itself, which are often used in cooking, and in addition, are used in folk-medicine and cosmetology. Well, consider everything in order.
Useful Composition of Potatoes
Almost a quarter of the mass of the potato's tuber is carbohydrates − about 20-25%, and they are expressed in the form of starch. There are also proteins of the order of 2% protein and about 0.5% fats. Unlike the other vegetables, the potatoes have high calorie content. So, depending on the type of potato, this figure varies between 77-85 kcal per 100 g of product. The potato's protein contains various amino acids, which, as a rule, are referred to full-fledged proteins similar to those found in meat or dairy products. As for minerals, micro- and macro-elements, the following substances are present in potatoes:
- a high content of potassium (about 570 mg);
- phosphorus (about 50 mg);
- magnesium and calcium;
- iron and cobalt.
The potatoes are rich in the spectrum of vitamins, among which the most of the vitamins C and E, there are vitamins of the group В-В2 and В6, and a small amount of the vitamins РР, К and D. In the potato there are also to a large extent the acids: malic, oxalic and citric. They are also affecting the useful properties of potatoes.
Useful Potato Qualities
Due to such high potassium content in the potato tubers, one can safely say that this vegetable improves the metabolism, removing salts and other harmful substances from the body. Thus, the potato has become one of the most effective products, which is recommended with proper, separate or dietary nutrition. Unfortunately, some quantity of the potassium is lost during the cooking or roasting, so the baked potatoes retain it best of all. In view of this, the potatoes are often recommended for such diseases and ailments as the hypertension and the atherosclerosis, as well as against the development of other diseases associated with the heart failure.
The potatoes are an excellent tool for fighting with the ulcers and gastritis diseases. It is effective at increased acidity of the digestive system since the content of acids in the potatoes is not so great, and therefore, it is a more neutral product, not causing acute reactions. That is why, often with such diseases and problems it is recommended to use boiled potatoes or mashed potatoes without the addition of salt. The potatoes are a part of the medical diets (№ 5, 7 and so on), which are made especially for people suffering from the gastritis, the kidney and the liver diseases and so on. It should also be taken into account that, despite the low protein content, they have their effect, saturating the body with power and energy, forcing it to grow and develop.
There are a lot of folk recipes in which potatoes are used, and which are recommended for the certain types of diseases. So, for example, when the allergic spots appear on the surface of the skin, after burns, or if there are bursting vessels, you can use the slices of the raw potato tubers. After cutting 2-3 pieces of potatoes, attach them for 5 minutes to the affected surface, and after 15 minutes rinse with water. Similarly, the potato's mask that helps to cleanse the face, remove irritation and general "fatigue" of the face is effective. For this, it is necessary to crush one cooked potato, add egg's yolk and 3-5 tablespoons of milk into it, stirring to the state of viscous porridge. Apply the mask to the face and hold for 20 minutes, then wash it with clean water and allow the face to rest for another 40 minutes.
To cleanse the organism it is useful drinking the potato's juice. For this, it must be mixed with other useful juice, for example the carrot or the beetroot. This combination will improve the organism, improving digestion and reducing the perception of nervous disorders. Thus, it is necessary to drink about a pint of juice daily, in proportions − about 0.7 pt of the carrot or any other vegetable juice, and about 0.3 pt of the potato one.
Harmful Properties of Potatoes
Because of the high caloric content and the large amount of carbohydrates, it is not recommended abusing the potatoes for people prone to fatness. It is enough for them to eat the potatoes 2-3 times a week. In addition, it contains the starch, which is very hard to digest by the organism, and it does not matter whether the person is inclined to fullness or not.
As you can see, we did not specifically discuss the folk recipes, using the potatoes, to treat gastroenterological and ulcer diseases since in that case it is better to go to the hospital, than to use questionable prescriptions.
